Fuse vs Circuit Breaker: Which Do You Need?

Fuses and circuit breakers both provide overcurrent protection, but their performance is device and circuit specific. A fuse is replaced after opening; a breaker can usually be reset after the fault is corrected.

Compare Fuse Circuit breaker
After operation Replace with specified part Reset after diagnosing fault, if still serviceable
Time-current behavior Depends on fuse class/series Depends on breaker technology and trip curve
Fault interruption Must have adequate interrupt rating Must have adequate interrupt rating
Coordination May limit fault energy effectively in some designs May offer switching and selective coordination in some designs

Neither technology is always faster, more accurate or higher capacity. A semiconductor fuse and a thermal breaker differ greatly, but the same comparison cannot be generalized to every fuse and breaker. Published “trip at 200%” tables must reference actual curves and conditions.

Choose according to the equipment, conductor, normal current, startup surge, prospective fault current, AC/DC voltage and service needs. If a breaker trips repeatedly, do not keep resetting it without fixing the cause. Panels may use both devices for distinct downstream circuits; only the actual design and ratings establish protection.
