Cartridge Fuse vs Blade Fuse

Cartridge Fuse vs Blade Fuse

Cartridge and blade describe mounting styles, not universal electrical capabilities. A cylindrical cartridge fits clips or a cap holder; an automotive blade fuse fits a matching slotted socket.

Decision Check
Mechanical fit Length, diameter, blade form and holder design
Electrical duty Current rating and time-current curve
System AC or DC voltage and prospective short-circuit current
Environment Holder temperature, exposure and vibration rating

Cartridge products range from small electronics fuses to industrial and PV fuses with very different ratings. Blade-style products also come in several forms and ranges. A low-voltage automotive ATO is unsuitable for a mains holder, but it does not follow that all blade fuses are limited to 32 V or that all cartridges have high interrupt capacity.

Begin with the equipment’s holder and original part number. For a new design, determine the voltage, conductor protection requirement and available fault current before selecting the fuse series and holder together. Never adapt one format to another using loose contacts or a makeshift connection.
