How Many Amps Is My Fuse?

Read the printed or stamped ampere marking on the fuse. If it is not legible, find the equipment manual, fuse-box legend or exact part number. A color can help identify a standard automotive blade fuse, but it is not sufficient by itself.

Format Where to look
Automotive blade Number on plastic body or top, then vehicle diagram
Glass or ceramic cartridge Ink on body, engraving or end-cap marking
Bolt-down / industrial Stamped body or printed label and part number

Examples: 10A denotes a 10 ampere rating; T2A commonly denotes a 2 A time-delay cartridge in certain marking systems. Other markings describe voltage, speed or series, so read the full label and datasheet. The ampere value is not the exact current at which the fuse trips.

For common small automotive blade colors, red often indicates 10 A, blue 15 A, yellow 20 A and green 30 A. MAXI or specialized product families can differ. If the old fuse is unmarked or destroyed, do not calculate a replacement from watts ÷ volts and round up: that ignores startup, conductor protection and the device’s original design. Use the manufacturer specification or qualified service.
