What Size Fuse for a 1000W Inverter?

A 1000 W inverter’s battery-side fuse depends on the inverter model, minimum battery voltage, conversion efficiency, cable and surge behavior. There is no reliable universal “100–125 A with 4 AWG” prescription.

Estimate DC input current

At 1000 W AC output and 90% efficiency, the estimate is 1000 ÷ (12.0 × 0.90) ≈ 93 A. At 10.5 V input and 85% efficiency, it rises to about 112 A. These are full-load estimates; check the actual inverter specifications and its manual’s fuse and cable recommendation.

Check the complete DC path

Size the positive and return conductors for continuous current, installation conditions and acceptable voltage drop. A longer run or lower operating voltage can call for a larger conductor. Install a DC-rated fuse near the battery/source to protect the positive cable, and verify the fuse interrupt rating suits the battery’s potential fault current. Match the fuse’s time-current response to normal startup and permitted surge without exceeding the cable rating.

An inverter’s short-duration AC surge rating does not automatically mean the DC fuse should be oversized. If the fuse opens, diagnose cable connections, input voltage, overload and the connected appliance. Use the exact manufacturer’s guidance where available.
